OK, momento de hacer mi primer post real, será uno sencillo y relajado…

Quizás no soy el chico más fanático de la música pero ciertamente disfruto de ella, mi gusto es bastante comercial pero también disfruto de un par de “artistas” que se salen un poco del “común”… Uno de ellos sin duda es Jonathan Coulton…

Jonathan Coulton es un músico y -como él mismo se denomina- “superestrella del Internet”… Como se darán cuenta si investigan un poco sobre él, ese título no es más que parte de su sentido del humor. Y es precisamente una de las cosas que más caracterizan a él y su música, que simplemente no se toma a sí mismo muy en serio, es un chico regular que escribe canciones extravagantes sobre calamares gigantes, “monos” programadores, zombies, Tom Cruise y otras criaturas.

Sus particulares canciones y desestresada personalidad lo han convertido en un ídolo para un segmento muy particular y en el que por supuesto me incluyo, y es ese segmento geek… Es decir ¿Qué geek no se identificaría con un mono programador?

Un aspecto que aplaudo de JoCo -como lo conocen sus fans-, es el hecho de liberar sus canciones bajo la licencia Creative Commons, donde en resumidas cuentas puedes usar su trabajo para cualquier cosa que no tenga fines comerciales (ganar dinero). Cosa que muy pocos artistas de la música hacen.

Les recomiendo aprendan un poco sobre esto, y si son artistas o crean productos u obras de algún tipo, piensen en compartir una o dos de ellas con el mundo bajo esa licencia. Yo lo he hecho y es muy satisfactorio.

OK, time to make my fist real post, It’ll be a simple and relaxed one…

Maybe I’m not the greatest music fan around but I certainly enjoy music, my taste is pretty commercial but I also enjoy a couple of artists that stand out from the “common”… One of them is undoubtedly Jonathan Coulton…

Jonathan Coulton is a musician and -in his own words- “Internet superstar”… As you will notice if you read a little more about him, that title is just his peculiar sense of humor. And that’s one of the notable things about him and his music, he simply does not take himself too seriously, is just a regular guy who writes extravagant music about giant squids, code monkeys, zombies, Tom Cruise and other creatures.

His peculiar songs and relaxed attitude have turned him into an idol for a particular segment where I’m of course included, and is of course the geek segment… I mean, tell me what geek doesn’t feel identified with something like a code monkey?

One aspect I applaud about JoCo - that’s how some fans know him-, is the fact that he releases his songs under the Creative Commons license, that in short means you can use his work in whatever you want as long as doesn’t have commercial uses (money profit). Thing that very few artists do.

Feel free to investigate more about this, and if you are artists or “create” any kind of work, think about sharing a couple of them with the world under that license. I’ve done it myself and is a very fulfilling thing.

Muy bien, ahora que tengo un poquito más tiempo, permítanme darles una mejor bienvenida…

Primero que nada, gracias por visitar, soy terrible anfitrión en persona y evito las visitas, pero por este medio soy un poco más sociable… En fin, espero disfruten el lugar.

La filosofía tras este blog es muy simple pero significativa, todo gira en torno a la creación de contenido. Para los que no están familiarizados con el término, la creación de contenido a la que me refiero es a la relacionada con el iInternet, y principalmente a los blogs…

Antes, el internet era “llenado” por empresas, instituciones, organizaciones o geeks/nerds que poseían las herramientas, conocimientos y falta de vida social para ello; ahora la creación de contenido está tan ampliamente asequible, que todos podemos casi literalmente en un par de clicks iniciar nuestro blog y llenarlo con lo que queramos… Pero ahí aparece otro problema para este ya convulsionado mundo, la calidad de ese contenido…

Al igual que hay gente de sobra en el mundo, hay blogs de sobra en el Internet, y al igual que con la gente, hay blogs cuyo contenido, principios, fundamentos, razón de ser y filosofías carecen de “calidad”… Y no hablo de calidad visual, ancho de banda ni mucho menos calidad del código fuente, hablo de la calidad del ya mencionado contenido.

Todo es relativo y por lo tanto muchos podrán decir “la calidad es subjetiva, lo que para tí es bueno, para mí no lo es”…La mejor respuesta que les puedo dar para definir a qué calidad me refiero viene de una cita algo particular…

En la película Scent of a woman (perfume de mujer) dirigida por Martin Brest, el personaje de Al Paccino, Frank, dice una frase (de tantas) que no olvidaré… (no la recuerdo textualmente, pero la idea es la misma)

“…En la vida he tomado muchas malas decisiones, pero en todos y cada uno de esos dilemas, siempre supe cual era la decisión correcta…”

De eso se trata este blog, de “la decisión correcta”… Y aunque eso sigue siendo una definición subjetiva, es una buena manera de explicarlo.

Vivo en un mundo, y especialmente en un país donde los conceptos de “comunidad”, “social”, “colectivo”, “aporte”… se han deformado del modo más grotesco y monstruoso posible… Hay que entender que “servicio comunitario” no es sólo ir a un barrio a pintar murales ni construir iglesias, ni siquiera vacunar niños contra alguna enfermedad… Cada pequeña cosa que podamos hacer para el bien común de todos los seres que habitan en el universo y no sólo el ser humano, es trabajo comunitario… y tan significativo como curar a un niño de la malaria.

Llámenme ambicioso, pero no diré “no pretendo cambiar al mundo” porque es exactamente lo que pretendo hacer.

Entre otras cosas, este blog será un canal para expresar mis ideas y contribuciones para un bien común y global, ya sean estas ideas sueños utópicos, propuestas mucho más pragmáticas o simplemente un pequeño escape de la estresante rutina diaria. Por supuesto, todo desde un punto de vista nerd, así que todo en este blog tendrá un sabor muy geek :)

First of all, thanks for visiting, I’m a terrible host in person and avoid visits, but in this media I’m a little more sociable… Anyway, I hope you enjoy the place.

The philosophy behind this blog is very simple but meaningfull at the same time, It’s all about content creation. For those who aren’t familiar with the concept, the content creation I’m talking about is the one related to the Internet, and mainly for blogs…

In the past, the Internet was “filled” by companies, institutions, organizations or geeks/nerds that had the tools, knowledge and lack of social live for it; now content creation is so widely accessible that we can almost literaly in a couple of clicks, start our own blog and fill it with whatever we want… But another problem arises in this already convulsed world, the quality of that content…

Just as there’s excess of people in the world, there’s excess of blogs on the Internet, and just like with people, there are blogs whose content, principles, grounds, reason of being and philophies falls shot in “quality”… And I’m not talking about visual quality, or bandwidth and far less about the source code; I’m talking about the quality of the already mentioned content.

Everything is relative and some of you could say “quality is a subjective concept, something that is good for you, may not be good for me”… The best answer I can give to define the quality I’m talking about comes from a peculiar quoting…

In the movie Scent of a woman, directed by Martin Prest, Al Paccino’s character, Frank, says one phrase (of many) that I won’t forget… (I don’t remember it textually, but the idea is the same)

“…I’ve taken a lot of bad decisions in life, but in each and every one of those dilemmas, I have known which one was the right decision…”

That’s what this blog is about, “the right decision”… And even when that is still a subjective concept, is a good way to explain it.

I live in a world, and specially in a country where concepts of “community”, “social”, “collective”, “contribution”… have been deformed to the most grotesque and monstrous possible way… It has to be clear that “communitary service” is not just matter of going to a ghetto to paint murals, build churches, not even vaccinate childs against a disease… Every little thing we make for the common benefit of every living being in the universe and not just human being is comunitary service… and just as meaningful as curing a kid from malaria.

Call me ambicious, but I won’t say “I don’t pretend to change the world” because that’s exactly what I want to do.

Among other things, this blog will be a channel to express my ideas and contributions for a common and global benefit, either with utopic dreams, much more pragmatical proposals, or simply a little scape from the stressful routine of the day. Of course, everything from a nerd POV, so everything in this blog will have a very geeky taste :)

Disculpen lo breve del post, pero como buen nerd, la rutina que uno planea para el día, suele cambiar repentinamente por el aletear de una mariposa al otro lado del mundo, y bueno, debo salir corriendo al trabajo.
